This
association aims at assigning to the guitar the part it deserves to play
among the greatest soloist instruments. In order to achieve this purpose,
an international interpretation contest was notably created in 1988 under
the Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of Belgium. |
This high level contest proceeded in Belgium every two years to edition 2008.
It will be then organized every three years. It is worldwide considered as one of the most prestigious of its kind.

Together
with the Queen Elisabeth Music Contest, " Printemps de la Guitare
" is member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions
in Geneva (member of the
UNESCO).
|
From
the beginning onwards, this contest has been sponsored by clubs from the
Kiwanis International, a Service Club founded in 1915. In 1999, "Printemps
de la Guitare" was acknowledged as cultural action of the Belgium-Luxemburg
District from this Service Club.

|
Approximately
sixty contestants from about thirty countries and graduated from the most
renowned guitar colleges, participate to each edition. They lodge in host
families where they benefit from the best conditions to prepare the competition.

The finals
are organized in prestigious concert rooms and the four finalists are
accompanied by famous orchestras (Belgian National Orchestra, 1 Fiamminghi,
Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonie), conducted by experienced directors
(Georges Octors, Rudolph Werthen, Patrick Baton …). |

|
The jury, presided over by Rafaël Iturri,
professor emeritus at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, is composed
of seven members selected from among eminent guitar virtuosos
and teachers on the international scene. Besides the illustrious personalities
that enhanced the jury of the preceding editions, the fantastic and late
lamented Spanish guitarist Narcisco Yepes cannot be ignored.

Printemps de la Guitare produces the CD
recorded by the prize winner(s) of each edition of the contest. This
CD is a part of the collection named "Printemps de la Guitare".
